North American B-25 Mitchell

The B-25 was built in greater numbers than any other U.S. twin-engine bomber. The only airplane in the USAAF inventory capable of performing the carrier-launched bombing mission against Japan, it became famous overnight when Lt Col James Doolittle's Raiders hit Tokyo on April 18, 1942. The B-25 was named in honor of Brig Gen Billy Mitchell who had been a vigorous proponent of airpower in the 1920's. |
