Boeing B-50 Superfortress

In 1944, Boeing began the Model 345-2, an enhanced capability B-29 Superfortress.  In addition to more powerful R-4360 engines (tested in another B-29 derivative, the XB-44), the B-50 received lighter, stronger wings and landing gear and an increased area vertical stabilizer.  The result was not only improved performance but a gross weight increase of almost 20 percent.

The new B-50 first flew in 1947.  This aircraft filled the strategic bomber role from the end of World War II until the introduction of the B-36 Peacemaker.

Converted to in-flight refueling tankers, the KB-50 served in Vietnam into the late 1960s.
