             In
1943, the Chase Aircraft Company was founded to design and produce a
heavy assault glider for the U.S. Army.  Five YCG-18A
models were built one of which was converted to a YC-122
transport with the addition of two wing mounted radial engines.
A larger glider (designated the XCG-20)
was designed and redesignated the XC-123 when powered by two
            R-2800 engines.  This

            in 1949.
In 1953 Chase was acquired by Kaiser-Frazer
Corporation and the development/production contract was awarded to Fairchild.
Over 300 were built and delivered the the U.S. Air Force, Saudi
Arabia and Venezuela.  At least one squadron served with the
U.S. Air Force Reserve as late as 1982. |
