Designed to meet a USAF requirement for a large global range transport the C-141 began squadron operations with the Military Airlift Command in 1965. The type's capability was demonstrated during operations in Vietnam. Lockheed's design had a load capability greater than it's physical capacity leading to lengthening the fuselage by 23 feet. This modification first flew in 1977. The last C-141, S/N 66-0177, was retired on 6 May 2006. |
