          Designed
            by McDonnell Douglas and named for the C-124
            Globemaster II, the C-17 Globemaster III is the U.S. Air
            Force's newest cargo aircraft.  The C-17 is capable of
            strategic, tactical and airdrop missions.  The aircraft can
            take-off and land in as little as 3,000 feet.
             The prototype first flew on 15 September
