The
Piasecki PD-22 was a development of the U.S. Navy's
HRP-2. First flown in 1952, the U.S. Air Force designated this
helicopter the H-21 Workhorse.
The U.S. Army also ordered the H-21 naming it the Shawnee.
The Shawnee could carry 20 fully-equipped troops into combat, which
it did in Vietnam.
In production from 1954 - 1959, the H-21 was flown
by the armed forces of the U.S., Canada, France and West
Germany. The H-21 was also known as the Flying Banana. |
