The Sikorsky S-61 was designed for the anti-submarine role and first flew in 1959.  Initially designated the HSS-2 by the U.S. Navy, the designation was changed to SH-3 shortly after the prototype's first flight.  The Navy named this helicopter the Sea King.

The U.S. Air Force also acquired the Sea King for combat search and rescue missions, redesignated the HH-3 and receiving the nickname "Jolly Green Giant" in Vietnam.  A transport version with a rear loading ramp was designated the CH-3.

The CH-3 was used by Canada, Norway, Malaysia, Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom.  The S-61 was produced by Agusta under license.
