The Boeing Vertol Model 114 was selected by the U.S. Army as a
battlefield mobility helicopter. First flown in 1961 as the YHC-1B,
the pre-production models were redesignated CH-47s and given the name
Chinook.
The Chinook saw service in South East Asia not only for the transport
of troops and supplies and for casualty evacuation but also for the
recovery of damaged aircraft and the airlift of refugees. Loading
can be accomplished by a rear ramp.
