Privately funded by Canadair, the Tutor first flew on 13 January 1960.  Featuring side-by-side seating, further development of the CT-114 basic trainer has resulted in an armament trainer and light-attack aircraft.  The Malaysian Air Force purchased the CT-114 in 1967 and named the aircraft Tebuan (Wasp).

The Canadian Forces Snowbirds Demonstration Team have flown the Tutor since 1971.
