A modified delta-wing aircraft, the XF4D first flew in 1951.  The second prototype set a world speed record of 753 mph in 1953.  Problems with the proposed Westinghouse J40 engine led to adoption of the Pratt & Whitney J57 with production deliveries to the Navy beginning in 1956.

The F4D was used in front-line service until the late 1960s.  It was redesignated the F-6 in 1962.
