          When
the Navy originally approached North American for a jet fighter in
1944, the requirements called for a straight-wing aircraft (the
FJ-1).  The appearance of the swept-wing MiG-15 in Korea forced
            a re-evaluation.
The swept-wing FJ-2 Fury was based on the
U.S. Air Force F-86 and first flew
            1951.  An all-weather version, the FJ-4, first flew in 1954. |
