The Aircraft

After the acceptance of its FF-1 and F2F fighters by the U.S. Navy, Grumman decided to develop a utility amphibian to replace the Loening OL-9.  The prototype XJF-1 first flew in 1933.

Minor changes and a designation change to J2F kept this aircraft in production during World War II and in service into the post-war years.

The last model, the J2F-6 was built by Columbia Aircraft.

In 1948, the U.S. Air Force acquired several surplus Navy J2Fs  for use in air-sea rescue duties.  These aircraft received the designation OA-12.  In both services, the Grumman product was known as the Duck.
