Designed
to replace the MiG-17, the MiG-19
prototype first flew in 1953. The MiG-19 was the Soviet
Union's first supersonic fighter. With its wings swept at 55o,
large wing fences were used to "keep the airflow from defecting
to the wingtips".
The MiG-19 was also license built in China by
Shenyang. The Chinese version was designated the J-6.
Possibly as many as 10,000 were built by the Soviet Union, Poland,
Czechoslovakia and China.
The NATO reporting name for the MiG-19 was "Farmer").
