The Aircraft

In the mid 1950s both the U.S. Army and Marine Corps required a battlefield surveillance aircraft able to operate from rough fields on a STOL basis.  Initially designated the YAO-1 and changed to the YOV-1, the prototype first flew on 14 April 1959.

The first turbo-prop aircraft to enter service with the U.S. Army, the Mohawk is slow but highly maneuverable with a well armored cockpit.  The OV-1 saw service in Vietnam.  The Mohawk was retired in 1996 with 375 having been built.
