Lockheed P-38 Lightning

The Lightning was designed in 1937 and competed with the Bell P-39 Airacobra for a USAAC contract that specified an Allison V-1710 engine.  The Airacobra design emphasized light weight to get the best performance; the  Lockheed design team used the unorthodox approach of a twin engine fighter.

Almost 10,000 Lightnings were produced and saw action in every major combat theater.
