Developed from the P-36 "Hawk", the P-40 Warhawk was the best U.S. fighter available at the outbreak of WWII.  Probably the most famous unit to fly the P-40 was the American Volunteer Group (AVG) "Flying Tigers" that flew out of Chinese bases against the Japanese.

Different versions of the P-40 were also known as the Tomahawk and Kittyhawk.  More than 14,000 were produced.
