Built in response to a U.S. Navy requirement for a jet trainer, the prototype T-2 (then designated the T2J) first flew in 1958.  The Buckeye served in U.S. Navy and Marine Corp training squadrons as well as the Venezuelan and Hellenic Air Forces.

The Buckeye was scheduled to be phased out by the McDonnell Douglas T-45 Hawk in 1987, but as of 1999 a few are still in service.  Over 600 were built.
