North American T-28 Trojan

click on photo for more images

Designed to replace the aging AT-6/SNJ Texan, the prototype T-28 first flew in 1949.  The T-28 entered U.S. Air Force service in 1950 and Navy service in 1954.  The T-28A was powered by the Wright R-1300; later models used the R-1820.

In addition to training, modified T-28s were used as Counter Insurgency (COIN) ground attack aircraft in Vietnam.  The last Navy T-28s were phased out of service in 1984.  Almost 2,000 were built.
