Northrop X-4 Bantam

Originally designated the XS-4, the Northrop X-4 Bantam was designed to study the flight characteristics of tailless aircraft at transonic speeds.  First flown in 1948, two aircraft flew over 100 flights by the time the program ended in 1953.  The X-4 proved that aircraft without a horizontal tail are not suitable for transonic flight.
