McDonnell XF-85 Goblin

With the expected introduction of the B-36 with a range beyond any conceivable escort fighter, the U.S. Air Force developed a requirement for a "parasite" fighter that could be carried in the bomb bay of a B-36.  The XF-85 Goblin first flew in 1948.

Two Goblins were built and were successfully launched from a B-29 mother ship.  Hooking back on was problematic.  The test program was terminated in 1949 as in-flight refueling began to show promise.
