Based loosely on the Yak-3, the Yak-11 was the Warsaw Pact's main trainer directly after World War II.  First flown on 10 November 1945, almost 4,500 were produced by 1956 including license built LET C-11s in Czechoslovakia.

A tricycle landing-gear Yak-11U was also produced.  This aircraft remained in service with Soviet Air Force until 1962.

The NATO code name for the Yak-11 was "Moose"
