The prototype Yak-55 first flew in 1981.  This aircraft was used by the Russian Aerobatic Team in 1984 and won World Aerobatic Championship.

With the introduction of composites, the Yak-55 is now outclassed in Unlimited competition but is competent in Advanced competition.  It has a fast rate of roll, great visibility, low maintenance, and easy handling.
