History

1907: U.S. Army Signal Corps establishes the Aeronautical Division to take "charge of all matters pertaining to military ballooning, air machines, and all kindred subjects."

1914: U.S. Army Signal Corps Aviation Section replaces the Aeronautical Division.

1918: U.S. Army aviation is transferred from the Signal Corps to a newly created Air Service of the U.S. Army.

Designations

From the U.S. Army Signal Corps' purchase of their first heavier-than-air aircraft in 1909 through 1919, the U.S. Army used the different manufacturers' designations.
