Aircraft by Nation

United States
Navy/Marine Corps (1911 -1914)

When the Navy purchased its first aircraft in 1911, its designating system was also a serial number system (identifying both type and individual aircraft).  For example, the first Curtiss aircraft purchased was the A-1...the second Curtiss purchased was the A-2.  The first Wright aircraft purchased was the B-1.

As long as there were few types, the system worked.  The designators were:

A: Curtiss land or hydroaeroplane (seaplane)
B: Wright land or hydroaeroplane
C: Curtiss flying boat
D: Burgess flying boat
E: Curtiss amphibian (converted from A-2)
