United States
Navy/Marine Corps (1923 - 1962)
Observation: The first
Navy observation aircraft were used as spotters for the battleships
guns. By World War II, this role had been taken over by
"OS" and "SO" (Observation Scout and Scout
Observation) aircraft. The "O" for Observation designation
was used by the U.S. Marines for what the U.S. Army would call "Liaison"
aircraft.
