Navy/Marine Corps (1923 - 1962)
Scout/Bomber: The designation
"S" for Scout was originally used for reconnaissance aircraft;
aircraft that would find the enemy fleet in the days before radar. By the mid-1930s the development of more capable aircraft lead
to the development of dual role aircraft and the introduction of the
designation "SB" for Scout Bomber aircraft. Scout Bomber
aircraft were used primarily as dive bombers and close air support
aircraft during World War II.
