In
1931, designer Frank Halford increased the bore of the Gipsy III
from 114 to 118 mm. The resulting engine was known as the
Gipsy IIIA or the Gipsy Major. De Havilland produced
over 14,500 Gipsy Majors, over half the total production of all
Gipsy engines.
Gipsy Majors acquired by the U.S. Army were
designated as the L-375. |
