With
the Great Depression impacting the market for the Granville
Brother's sport aircraft, chief engineer Robert Hall convinced the
Granvilles to build a racer that could win the Thomson Trophy.
Supported by the Springfield (Massachusetts) Air Racing Association,
the Model Z was first flown on August 22, 1931.
The Model Z won four events at the 1931 National
Races including the Thompson Trophy, but crashed killing pilot
Lowell Bayles attempting to break the land plane speed record later
that year. |
