Hawker Hunter

The Hawker Hunter was the United Kingdom's most successful post-war military aircraft.  Designed by Sir Sydney Camm, the prototype first flew in 1951.

The Hunter was replaced in the day fighter role in 1963 by the English Electric Lightning; however, continued on in various roles.  The last variant, the  T.8M was introduced as late as 1979.

The Hunter also did well as an export and was operated by the air arms of 19 countries.  A simple aircraft with almost 2,000 built, many are still in flying condition.
