The Aircraft

Designed by Sidney Camm, the Hawker Hurricane was the first monoplane to enter service with the Royal Air Force.  First flown in 1935, the Hurricane was the backbone of the RAF during the Battle of Britain.  Available in larger numbers than the more well-known Spitfire, the Hurricane was typically used to

attack bomber formations while Spitfires went after the fighters.

Over 8,000 Hurricanes were built by Hawker and Gloster with almost 3,000 going to the Soviet Union.
