The Northrop N9M was designed as a 1/3 scale test aircraft for the XB-35 flying wing bomber.  The first N-9M flew on 27 December 1942.

Once design testing was completed, the N9Ms were turned over to the the Air Force as familiarization aircraft for the YB-35.

When the B-35 program was cancelled, the first three N-9Ms were scrapped.  The N-9MB survived to be restored by the Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino, California.
