Nanchang CJ-6

The Nanchang CJ-6 was designed to replace the CJ-5 which was a license built Yak-18.  Independently from Yakovlev, the Chinese revised the Yak-18 design to incorporate retractable tricycle landing gear and a more pronounced wing dihedral.

When the CJ-6 first flew in 1958, it retained the same 145 hp M-11ER engine used by the CJ-5.  Use of the 260 hp Ivchenko AI-14R still left the aircraft underpowered.

In the CJ-6A model, a 285 hp Zhuzhou Huosai HS-6A engine was used.  Over 1,800 of this definitive version were built from 1962 to 1965.  Export versions were designated the BT-6 (for Basic Trainer-6).
