The B-17 was designed in response to a 1934 U.S. Army Air Corp (USAAC) request for a "multi-engine" bomber. Because the Army anticipated twin-engined designs and was not ready to fund four-engine bomber development, the B-17's twin-engine competitor (the B-18) was purchased.

With the B-24 Liberator and B-29 Superfortress, the B-17 was the U.S. Army's strategic bombing arm of World War II. Twelve O'Clock High
