Lockheed C-5 Galaxy

click on photo for more images

The C-5 Galaxy was Lockheed's response to a 1963 U.S. Air Force requirement for a heavy transport aircraft.  Similar in layout to the C-130 Hercules and C-141 Starlifter, the Galaxy first flew in 1968.  The Galaxy dwarfed every other aircraft then in existence.

Although Galaxies were only 12 percent of the airlift fleet used for Desert Shield, they carried 44 percent of all airlift cargo.
