In
1985, the U.S. Air Force requested proposals for an Advanced
Tactical Fighter (ATF) and selected two teams to build prototypes,
one led by Lockheed and one by Northrop. The Lockheed-Boeing-General Dynamics team proposed what was designated
the YF-22 Raptor which first flew in 1990. Both
fighters were designed to include stealth technology. The U.S.
Air Force selected the YF-22 over the Northrop-McDonnell Douglas
YF-23.
The F-22 entered operational status
in late 2005. |
