First
flown as the DC-9 Super 80 in 1979, the MD-80
had had a longer wingspan and fuselage length, updated systems and
more fuel-efficient engines than the Series 50. This aircraft
received the designation MD-80 when McDonnell Douglas discontinued
the Douglas Commercial designations in 1983.
The MD-80 series (and it's follow-on MD-90 series)
has several variants with varying fuselage lengths, engines, fuel
tanks and flight systems. The 1,000th MD-80 was delivered to
American Airlines in 1992.
McDonnell Douglas planned the MD-95 as a follow on
to it's MD-90; however, Boeing purchased McDonnell Douglas in 1997
and re-designated the planned aircraft as the 717. |
