MiG-23 (Flogger)

The
MiG-23 was designed to replace the MiG-21.
The MiG-23 uses a variable-
geometry (swing) wing capable of a sweep
of 16 to 72 degrees. Fully spread, the
MiG-23 has a
short takeoff and landing roll while carrying a heavy weapons
load. Fully swept, the MiG-23 can reach speeds exceeding mach
2. The
prototype 23-11 first flew on 10 June 1967.
The MiG-23 (named Flogger by NATO) was used
by the Warsaw Pact nations as well as Libya, Syria, Egypt, India,
Cuba, Algeria, Iraq, Afghanistan and North Korea.
A dedicated ground attack version, the MiG-27,
uses the same basic airframe. More than 4,000 Mig-23/27s have
been built. |
