Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-27 (Flogger)

In the late 1960s, Mikoyen developed a ground attack version of the MiG-23.  Designated the MiG-23BN, this aircraft was a basically a MiG-23 with a new forward fuselage incorporating better downward view and armor on the cockpit sides.

Continued development eliminated features required of a Mach 2 fighter no longer needed in an attack aircraft's flight regime.  The variable inlets and nozzle were eliminated and other minor fuselage changes made to increase stores capacity.  This new aircraft--designated the MiG-27 (NATO Flogger-D)--first flew around 1972.

The MiG-27 was license built by Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) in India.  Indian MiG-27s are named Bahadur (Valiant).
