Named after the 'mighty hunter' of the book of Genesis, the BAe Nimrod
is derived from the world's first jet airliner, the de Havilland Comet.
The first Hawker Siddeley Nimrod prototype flew in 1967, 18 years after the first flight of the
Comet. Primary Nimrod roles are those of anti-submarine warfare,
maritime surveillance and anti-shipping strike.
Nimrods were active in the Falklands/ Malvinas conflict and were
deployed in the Iraqi war of 1991.
