Curtiss O-52 Owl

The U.S. Army ordered over 200 Curtiss O-52 Owls as observation aircraft.  Experience in maneuvers indicated the Owl was not what was needed in the role.  The O-52 was the last "O" designated aircraft procured in quantity by the U.S. Army Air Forces.  The "L" designation for liaison aircraft like the Piper L-4 Grasshopper replaced the heavier observation aircraft.

The Owl was used for courier duties and submarine patrol.
