          Early
during World War II, Grumman decided to update their successful J2F
amphibian biplane to an all-metal monoplane.  Because of
production pressures for the TBF Avenger and F6F
            Hellcat, the
project was farmed out to the Columbia Aircraft Company.
Two prototypes were built with the first flying
in 1946.  The XJL-1 did not go into production. |
