Utility:  The "U" designation for Utility aircraft continued the existing U.S. Navy practice.  Prior to 1962, the U.S. Air Force used the "L" for Liaison designation both for aircraft used for observation and for aircraft used for light transport.  In 1962, the observation aircraft were re-designated "O" for observation and light transport aircraft "U" for Utility.
