The Akro was designed by Clayton Stephens in 1967 for for Women's Aerobatic Champion Margaret Richie.  In the early 1970s it was touted as the plane to beat the Pitts Special. The Akro was marketed to homebuilders.

The Akro design is the basis for the current mid-wing aerobatic aircraft.  Leo Loudenslager developed a derivative known as the Laser 200.  The Akro also influenced Walter Extra's design of the Extra 230.
