Army/Air Force (1924 - 1962)

Reconnaissance: The first photo reconnaissance aircraft was acquired by the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1930.  The designation "F" was used as "P" was already in use for Pursuit (Fighter) aircraft.  Shortly after World War II the "R" prefix replaced the "F" designation for Reconnaissance aircraft.
